Krissy was nice young girl who frequented the same chatroom that I once did. This story was her submission to a school writing contest back in 1996.
A mass of a mixture of black and white stood at the edge of the field chewing away at it's cud on a Sunday afternoon. The sun was high and shined on the cow's back with intensity. Moooo was hot. He was named Moooo by the local towns people and was a very friendly creature. He would stand at the edge of the field for a many long hours staring out into the horizon just waiting and waiting for something. Many people often wondered why he would just stare of like that, but even though he practiced this weird habit the people liked him.
Now Moooo was the only cow in the whole town and his owner had decided when he was just a calf that he would not butcher him when he came of age. He was a fairly large cow with big eyes, a floppy tail, and had a big black spot on his head. He was annually token to the state fair were his owner was thankful that he did not butcher him. He won various blue ribbons every year at the fair and stood out on the spot light for a brief moment in time. Moooo was usually amazed by the fairs with all the people coming and going and bustling about. He would occasionally accept an apple by a passerby and lick the little children's hands who reached out to pet him.
The winters were the worse for Moooo who loved to sun bathe in the sun during the summer. He would stop his hooves and shake about taking to rid himself of the snow when it was time for him to graze. The barn was cold and lonely with no bugs chirping calmly in the night, he often felt alone. But he was always able to get through it as most cows did and be ready to enjoy the spring.
When spring came Moooo took his usually spot at the edge of the field and stared out into the nowhere thinking. Thinking about what the year would bring and how long it would be until the state fair. The grass turned green early that spring and rained about once a week which Moooo enjoyed because that spring was more hot than the usual. That spring also the town people had a little parade in which his owner brought Moooo along in which they walked behind the town marching band in the parade. Moooo enjoyed this very much but after it was over he went back to the same routine at the edge of standing at the edge of the field, chewing, and thinking.
Summer came with a new burst of excitement, a new farmer was coming into town. Moooo over heard this story while his farmer was talking to the local town's priest. He learned that this farmer was moving into the lot next to his lot and that this farmer was from another state. It was the week of the big state farm that this farmer was coming to be his neighbor and Mooo spent even more time thinking at the edge of the field.
Through the bustle of people and children with cotton candy and hot dogs Moooo was led to the familiar arena. He trotted around led by his farmer and tried to look his best in front of the judges. Next was another cow led by a unfamiliar farmer that Mooo did not know. Moooo found the cow beautiful and graceful in her trots as she passed by him and he was curious to who this cow and farmer were.
When Mooo arrived home from the fair he had a little time to himself at the edge of the field and chewed his cud immensely. When he heard a Moooo come from his left and was startled out of his thoughts. He turned around and saw the cow from the fair with the new farmer!!!! He Moooo'ed back and walked towards the two figures in the middle of the field. When he reached them the farmer petted his white and black head while Moooo greeted the new brown cow named Carrie. He was happy to have a new friend in the lonely town as was no more the only cow in the town. He no longer sat at the edge of the field and chewing, he now spent his time accompanying Carrie. The next winter was no longer so lonely and cold for Moooo as he often walked across the snow drifted field met with Carrie in the middle had the feeling of loneliness melt away.
